I Hate My Writing Style (Diaries of a Blogging Noob)

Hey friends, hope we’re all keeping well.

Welcome back to another post in the ‘Blogging Noob‘ saga, where I document thoughts, experience, discoveries, insights, and lessons from my currently ongoing blogging journey.

Today, I really just want to vent out my frustration and disappointment over my writing style.

Simply put, I detest the way I write. I hate it.

I would even go so far as to say that my complete lack of improvement in writing is one of the prime reasons why I’m burned out from blogging. It’s simply a demotivating chore to write something I’m not happy with and have to put on the Internet every week. And while yes, I’m aware that this is totally normal in the blogging activity, I feel that there should be at least be some improvement in my writing after these couple of months.

And it’s not like blogging is the only practise I’m getting with writing. I’ve been writing in a diary pretty much everyday since the start of the year, and yet my diary entries are still a complete and awkward mess to read.

I suspect part of the reason why I’m feeling so dejected with writing lately, is because I’ve been reading so many excellent blog posts all written with a superb writing style.

It’s a bit hard to describe what my version of a ‘perfect’ or ‘superb’ writing style is, the best I can do is give examples of authors/bloggers who I wish to one day write like. David Perell, Ali Abdaal, Matthew Dicks, Tim Ferris, are among just a few.

I mean, have you ever just read a short piece of writing and go “Wow, I wish I could write like that”. That’s basically been me the last couple of weeks, and it’s been super frustrating and exhausting.

🤦🏻‍♂️What do I hate about my writing style? 🤦🏻‍♂️

Oh boy where do I start.

  • While it may not be very apparent on the blog, I feel like my writing is too casual a lot of the time. This is strikingly obvious if you look at even just two entries in my diary. I use ‘lol’, ‘lmao’, and ‘ngl’ so god damn much, that I feel like I’m reading through an exceptionally long text message from a 14 year old angsty teenager.
  • I’m horrible at describing events and telling stories. This is once again more obvious when peeking inside the diary, but I find it’s just really difficult for me to talk about an event in a compelling, or even just mildly interesting manner. Too often I go down the lazy route when writing in my diary, and add some ‘lmaooo’s at the end of the event summary to make it seem entertaining. And honestly that’s just so unbearably irritating to read back on.

🔥The Plan Of Action🔥

Alright, so I’ve got my complaints out of the way. Now what can I do about them?

  • Read more. Admittedly, I’ve been slacking a lot when it comes to reading. Maybe that’s once again because college life has gotten so hectic, but overall I’m not happy with how little I’ve been diving into books lately. So, I want to read more. Minimum 15 pages a day.
  • Write regularly. I’d be lying if I said I practise writing often. The truth is I’ve also been heavily slacking in that department recently. Even my diary consistency is falling apart, and I often have to make up a good few days’ entries all in one day. Yeah, not good.
  • Take diary-writing more seriously. If I really want to improve my writing style, this must give. Even though I’ve been convincing myself that diary-writing in any way is some form of practice, the truth is it’s really not when you’re always taking the piss with it. Therefore, my new goal is to write about 3 different things everyday, but making sure that I write about these things like I would for a blog post. What are the storyworthy moments from each day? That’s what I plan to capture from now on.

Any tips on how to improve one’s writing style? Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Stay safe👋🏼

  1. For the record, I think the kind of spill-your-guts stuff you wrote above is very engaging. I suspect most writers’ first drafts are pretty much like that (mine are). But then they re-write and re-write and re-write, adding a bit more spit-and-polish each time, while retaining the heart of that first gut-level draft.
