My Results from Dream Journaling for a Year

Hi friends, hope we’re all keeping well.

Something that I’ve wanted to talk about for a while now since I started this blog, was keeping a dream journal.
There’s many reasons why people would keep one. For example, keeping a dream journal is supposed to be a good way of increasing the chances of having a lucid dream – a dream in which you are aware that you’re in a dream, and which you have the power to control. Some people might like to write down their crazy and insane dream adventures they have, while others might just want to keep a document of their dreams etc.

I’ve personally been keeping a dream journal for a little over a year now, since the power to control what dreams you have sounded incredibly enticing to me, and I would like to share some of my own anecdotal results here.

The first thing I can undoubtedly say is that the the frequency of my dreams have definitely increased, ever since I’ve started keeping a dream journal. I’ve been having clearer dreams more regularly, and can remember them more after I wake up. After persuading one of my friends to try keeping a dream journal for a bit, he too reported an almost immediate increase in the amount of dreams he was having every night. His case was also more interesting, as he reported he was literally on the verge of having a lucid dream after just dream journaling for a mere 2 or 3 days.

The second thing I can say is that the amount of dreams I can have in a single night, has also increased. As in, I can have more than 1 dream in a single night. What I mean by this, is that sometimes I’ll be in the middle of a dream when it suddenly just cuts off/fades away as if I’m about to wake up, but then I enter a new dream with a different environment, different situation, and with different events happening. Since the contents of this dream is completely different to the one before,I’m technically counting this as a new, separate dream. I think the most dreams I have had in one night was around 5 or so.

Now, the biggest question is: can I lucid dream yet?

After approximately a year of on and off dream journaling I can say, unfortunately, I haven’t had a single lucid dream 😔
There definitely were many in which I was close to the realisation, but I always woke up before I could fully ‘realise and control’ the dream itself. I’ve briefly read posts online on how others have achieved the ability, and the general sentiment is that dream journaling should be done alongside other things, if you want to try lucid dreaming for real (which I have’t done at all 🙃). Basically, it wasn’t supposed to be the one and only method to lucid dream, but rather one of the tools that was supposed to be used alongside others. I suppose I’ll give it a try sometime, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit disappointed with my progress so far.

Do I regret keeping a dream journal for this long though? Definitely not. The amount of absolute insane and crazy adventures I’ve had in my dreams were all pretty cool to occasionally read back on, and I’ve definitely had a good laugh at some of them too.

Some examples of memorable dreams I’ve had over the past year include: battling a sea monster with some friends with superpowers, escaping from the FBI after they discovered I had the ability to levitate, evading an invasion from the Taliban, avoiding capture from a cyber harpy woman in a haunted mansion, fighting alongside the 300 Spartans, and the list goes on.

If you want to experience some clearer and more detailed dreams, I’d recommend giving a dream journal a shot. It takes roughly 5 minutes to record a good, detailed dream down, so it shouldn’t take too long.

Thanks for reading if you made it this far, stay safe!

  1. That’s so interesting! I did hear of this effect where your dream frequency increases the more you record them down, but I never really gave it much thought. Perhaps I should also try it. So do you just jot down what you dreamt of the moment you wake up?

    1. Yep, that’s pretty much exactly it! I should’ve also mentioned that it’s highly recommended you jot down the dreams as early as you can, since we all know dreams can fade away almost instantly after we get up.
It’s pretty fun looking back over your wildly different dreams, so I highly recommend giving it a shot. Thanks for the kind comment!

  2. Really interesting post. I learnt about dream journaling in one of my Psychology classes and we learnt that it often seems like your dreams are more frequent but in reality you just remember them more often as compared to before. The frequency usually remains the same, just your memory of dreams becomes better over time.

    1. Oh wow, that’s actually a really good point. It completely didn’t cross my mind that since I’m thinking and writing down dreams more often, I’d be remembering them better. Thanks for your insightful contribution!
